The Ballechin 2009 Aged 15 Years Huelva Orange Wine Cask Matured Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a unique and captivating expression that pushes the boundaries of flavor and tradition. Ballechin, the heavily peated single malt produced at Edradour Distillery in the Scottish Highlands, is known for its robust and smoky character. This 15 year old release, however, takes on a new dimension with its maturation in Huelva Orange Wine casks.
This whisky was distilled in 2009 and spent its initial maturation in ex-bourbon barrels, developing the signature Ballechin peat smoke and spice notes. It was then transferred to Huelva Orange Wine casks for a finishing period. These casks, sourced from the Andalusian province of Huelva in Spain, previously held a unique fortified wine made from local oranges. The orange wine adds a distinct citrusy sweetness and a layer of complexity to the whisky, complementing the smoky and earthy notes.
The use of orange wine casks is a testament to Edradour’s innovative spirit and its willingness to experiment with new flavors. The result is a whisky that is both bold and balanced, offering a truly unique taste experience. It’s bottled at a cask strength of 54.1% alc/vol, non-chill filtered, and with natural colour, preserving its full flavour and intensity.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: The nose is fresh and zesty, with aromas of orange peel, rich marmalade, and delicate citrus blossom. Honeyed stone fruits develop with time, while peat smoke and oak char linger in the background.
Palate: The palate is a symphony of flavours, with candied mango and dried orange mingling with spiced honey and bold, peated barley. The earthy smoke is balanced by the citrus sweetness, and notes of vanilla cream emerge with time.
Finish: The finish is long and complex, with baking spices, gentle smoke, and candied citrus lingering. A touch of peppercorn and nutmeg warmth adds a final touch of complexity.
The Ballechin 2009 Aged 15 Years Huelva Orange Wine Cask Finish Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a whisky that defies expectations and offers a truly unique taste adventure. It’s a testament to the quality of Ballechin’s spirit and the innovative approach of Edradour Distillery. If you’re looking for a whisky that combines the intensity of peat smoke with the bright sweetness of orange wine, this expression is an excellent choice.
